• The new Tampa Family Health Center is in Sulphur Springs

Thanks in part to federal, state and county funding, a new community health center in the Sulphur Springs section of Tampa held its grand opening Wednesday afternoon.

The Tampa Family Health Centers clinic located on Nebraska Avenue and Bird Street is expected to provide medical and dental services to neighborhood residents with Medicare and Medicaid, as well as those who lack health insurance or are underinsured.

Tampa area Congresswoman Kathy Castor, a strong supporter of President Obama's stimulus bill, said the new gleaming building is the answer to those critics who questioned how many jobs the landmark legislation created after its passage in 2009.

"You hear it tossed around like a political football, " Castor said of that criticism. "'It didn’t create any jobs.’ Well, the proof is right here," she added, looking to the new building as she addressed the audience that consisted of local community leaders, as well as members of Murray Construction, the local crew that built the facility.
