Starting March 13, St. Pete’s Emerald Bar will be home to an art show featuring Adam Turkel’s music-influenced pieces. The exhibit runs through March 27, but sadly, there will be no opening night reception.
“I usually throw a big opening party but due to COVID-19 and the [Emerald] not having live music anymore, I’m not doing one this time,” Turkel told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay.
About 40 original pieces are on the walls at the beloved downtown dive—located at 550 Central Ave. near the 600 Block of downtown St. Petersburg—and a preview of Turkel’s show is also available via altamonterecords.com.
“This show will be framed prints of my most recent portraits in my Sharpie art series as well as some of my classic gig posters,” Turkel said, adding that the art might change once a piece is sold.
Most of Turkel’s pieces feature rock gods, but there might be a professional wrestler or other pop culture icon thrown in. And unlike a lot of art shows, if you see a piece you like, you don’t have to wait for the end of the to make it officially yours.
“…you can buy something and take it home that night. I like to replace the pieces as they sell and chances are, the show at the end of the month will wind up being completely different by the time it wraps up,” Turkel said, “So I encourage people to keep checking back for new pieces throughout the month!”
Turkel is a busy guy, and if you miss the Emerald exhibition there are other chances to catch his art and music as he’s also working on a fine art piece for Mize Gallery’s “FLA: The Art of All Things Florida” show happening less than a mile away on May 7.
If you want to meet the man behind the art, Turkel’s lo-fi glam rock band The New Brutarians (with drummer and bassist Christina Wright) plays Tampa’s New World Brewery on Friday, April 2.
“People can come meet and talk to me there,” Turkel said.
