One hundred years later, St. Pete’s Museum of History is celebrating opening its doors to share the city’s storied history and heritage.

The museum will throw an anniversary party and festivities Feb. 11. The centennial celebration is $1 to attend for the full day, and the first 100 guests will receive a complimentary one-year membership pass to the museum.

The St. Petersburg Historical Society’s Museum opened its doors Feb. 11, 1922, after Mary Wheeler Eaton and a group of civic leaders approached the mayor and city council about donating an abandoned aquarium perched on the city’s pier. This forgotten building soon became a museum housing the young city’s history.

Since then, the museum has seen a century worth of municipal changes, pier reconstruction and evolving history.

Celebration attendees can enjoy a historic calendar giveaway, cake and several of the museum’s most iconic exhibitions and artifacts, including a 3,000-year-old mummy, a St. Pete history-filled “Building the Sunshine” exhibit and more—including modern pieces that help paint a picture of the city’s growth.

The St. Petersburg Museum of History, located at 335 2nd Ave. NE, is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from noon-5 p.m.
