It’s been about 100 years since a socialist ran successfully for office in Florida. Richie Floyd, a democratic socialist who now reps St. Pete’s District 8 city council seat, reset the clock last year. The former public school teacher garnered city residents’ support through grassroots organizing. Since getting elected to the council, Floyd has worked to get the council and city leadership to address the housing crisis. He’s tried twice to get support for a vote on rent control in two committees. Most recently, Floyd has been working on guaranteed right-to-counsel for tenants in the city. @richiejfloyd on Twitter
