Bay area drivers came in at no. 19 overall while two other Florida cities — Miami-Fort Lauderdale (no. 17) and Orlando (no. 7) — ranked as more aggressive in the study. Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Sacramento made up the top three overall.
The findings examined drives in the top 30 metropolitan areas by population as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau from November 2019-February 2019 using data compiled from the GasBuddy app’s “Drives” feature, which offers drivers an assessment of their driving habits during their trip in an effort to improve fuel efficiency, mapping out when and where a poor driving habit occurred.
GasBuddy says that aggressive driving habits (i.e. speeding, rapid acceleration and hard braking) can lower gas mileage by as much as 40 percent, costing drivers as much as $477 per year in additional fuel consumption.
Tampa-St. Petersburg ranked no. 25 in hard braking incidents, no. 11 in speeding incidents and no. 15 in rapid acceleration incidents, according to the study.
