I have a few ideas I think would improve our community for the future starting with our youth. Programs for kids expanding our educational focus beyond traditional academic subjects and incorporating practical life skills, to prepare individuals for a diverse range of challenges but also cultivate a more resilient and self-sufficient community. These areas I think our community needs is basic farming skills, financial literacy and balancing technology with active lifestyles.

Starting with teaching basic farming skills can reconnect individuals with the source of their food and promote sustainable non toxic practices. This not only enhances food security within the community but also encourages a healthier and more environmentally conscious lifestyle. Additionally, community gardens or shared agricultural spaces can strengthen social bonds and cooperation.

I would like to see education system prioritize investment strategies, particularly in areas like real estate, can empower community members to build wealth and financial stability. Understanding the principles of investment can lead to better economic decision-making, helping individuals secure their financial future and contribute to community development. This knowledge is particularly valuable in diversifying income sources beyond traditional employment. Our community is in the middle of real estate boom and all should participate not just the few.

Integrating entrepreneurship into the educational curriculum can foster creativity, critical thinking, and self-reliance. By equipping individuals with the skills to start and manage their own businesses, we empower them to contribute to the local economy, create job opportunities, and address community needs. This can also instill a sense of ownership and responsibility among community members.

While technology is integral to modern life, it’s essential to strike a balance. Encouraging healthy, active lifestyles and mindful use of technology can contribute to overall well-being. Promoting outdoor activities, communal events, and physical fitness can strengthen the fabric of the community, fostering social connections and reducing the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

This holistic approach can lay the foundation for a thriving and sustainable future, where each member is equipped with the tools needed to contribute positively to the collective well-being.

I wish I was taught these skills as a young kid in Tampa.—Richard Hales, Chef Owner Hales Blackbrick
