Tribal Style
Tampa's Tribal Style has managed to craft a meaty full-length that is both infectious and thoughtful. The quintet (which features three brothers) has delivered a charming synthesis of old-school reggae, R&B, funk and subtle turntablism to create a fresh sound that is at once classic and contemporary. Particularly arresting is the whispery, enchanting vocals of frontman Muthoni. His range is limited, but within that small space he makes each line simmer. Tribal Style will appear at the Southeast Music Alliance's 5 Year Anniversary Party, Sat., Aug. 4, State Theatre, St. Petersburg. 3 stars
