Hardcore's dynamic range is basically loud, louder, loudest. But Philadelphia quartet Paint It Black brings an element of melody to the genre. Hell, they even change tempos and include instrumental sections that stand apart from the rest of the song. And hear that? An acoustic guitar. PIB is fronted by Dan Yemin, a 15-year punk veteran and former member of Lifetime and Kid Dynamite. His lyrics range from deeply personal to stridently political, and he delivers them with a lunging snarl. Paint It Black will be joined by fellow Philadelphians Blacklisted, an equally brutal outfit with its own ear for hookage. A handful of other like-minded bands provide support.
