A rather diverse slate of live music happening on this Wed., Nov. 4. Take a look at the breakdown below…
July Talk, Little Hurricane with Dropin Pickup Toronto’s July Talk has been active for three years, their guitar grinding yet bright alt blues sound marked by the gruff barking masculine lead vocals of Peter Dreimanis (which have a distinctively Tom Waits quality) balanced by the dulcet-sweet cooing harmonies and sometimes lead of feminine counterpart Leah Fay. Little Hurricane is an explosive dirty blues two-piece made up of frontman Anthony “Tone” Catalano and drummer Celeste “C.C.” Spina, who’ve no doubt been earning all manner of White Stripes comparisons and are impressive enough to deserve them. The Psychedelic Furs It’s been a while since the Furs have released new material (1991 was the last LP), but the British rock band that came up in the ‘70s pushing post-punk sounds and crossing over to U.S. audiences with New Wave hits like “Pretty In Pink” and “Love My Way” is a touring behemoth, deep-voiced vocalist/songwriter Richard Butler and bassist bro Tim still leading the pack in vigorous live shows touching on seven studio albums. (Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg)—LP
Dee Dee Bridgewater, Irvin Mayfield & the New Orleans 7 Old school meets the neu on hump day when Grammy and Tony award winning jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater brings all the influence of her 1980s French adventure to the Straz, where she’ll be joined by another golden gramophone-wielding N’awlins native — trumpeter Irvin Mayfield. The duo will support a brand new album, this year’s Dee Dee’s Feathers, where the 65-year-old siren tasks the 37-year-old brass virtuoso with helping her explore all the corners of the Crescent City’s majestic musical history.
