Mother's Day is coming up. So what are you going to get her? Flowers that will be thrown away? Candy that will be eaten and forgotten? A card to go with all the others in a shoebox?

How about some comedy instead?

Moms like to laugh, and a fun evening out might be just what she needs. And it doesn't even have to be on Mother's Day. Any time you spend with her this week will be appreciated. Just find a show and enjoy some laughter with the woman who took care of you when all you did was cry. Come to think of it, maybe you should buy her a few glasses of wine, too. She deserves it.

Here's the lineup:

Comedy Clubs

Dov Davidoff . Davidoff’s set comes off like funny stream-of-consciousness thoughts. In reality, it’s well-written and delivered in an entertaining way. His comedy is clever, blunt and usually a pretty accurate analysis of the topic at hand.

$15-$17. Friday, 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.; Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.Tampa Improv, 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. 813-864-4000. improvtampa.com.

Funny Diva Show. This Mother's Day show features talented ladies such as Aniria, Trish Keating and Quinton Greene. Wait, Greene's a guy! No matter. He's funny, and since he's a father he probably has a little mom material up his sleeve.

$8. Sunday, 7 p.m. Tampa Improv, 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. 813-864-4000. improvtampa.com.

Andy Woodhull. Woodhull has an understated presence and a non-traditional style. An effective storyteller, his material is about building layers of absurdity and creating a steady rhythm of humor out of them.

$10-$16.50. Friday, 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.; Saturday, 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.; and Sunday, 7 p.m. Side Splitters, 12938 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. 813-960-1197. sidesplitterscomedy.com.

DC Benny. Benny was a finalist a couple years back on Last Comic Standing, but don't think of him as a newcomer to comedy. He has decades of stand-up experience, extensive writing credits and has thrived in the competitive New York comedy scene. He often takes his act nationally, and will stop by New Port Richey for a slate of weekend shows.

$15. Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Snappers Grill & Comedy Club, 36657 U.S. Highway 19 N., Palm Harbor. 727-938-2027. snappersgrill.com.

Bull Ohse. Bull's an imposing figure, but on stage the happy dad is all about cleaner, witty comedy. Expect clever material from a guy who doesn't have to be dirty to make you laugh.

$18-$25. Wednesday–Saturday, 9:30 p.m. Coconuts, 5501 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach. 727-360-5653. coconutscomedyclubs.com.

Juanita Lolita. Jungle Bill's kicks off its rebranding launch with a local favorite known for her down-home wit and clean material. Lolita's style works everywhere from churches and comedy clubs, with relatable premises and a positive outlook.

$10. Saturday, 8:30 p.m. Jungle Bill's, 2950 Gulf to Bay Blvd., Clearwater. 727-400-6920. 2palmstampabay.com.

One-nighters and Independent Shows

John Jacobs. A couple years back, Jacobs had roles on a couple of MTV programs and moved to Los Angeles. Now he's back in the area, producing his own shows and working on extending his stand-up set. He'll close this show with the same irreverent wordplay and flippant attitude that made him a local favorite before he was on television.

Free. Saturday, 9 p.m. Peggy O'Neill's, 13910 W. Hillsborough Ave., Tampa. 813-749-7192.
