Crumb w/Lance Bangs/Brother Cephus/Justin Depth There is a pair of trippy, almost psychedelic looking hands on the cover art for Crumb’s latest Bandcamp track, “Plants,” and the image makes a lot of sense. The track — while barely over three minutes long — feels like an extended journey into far out sound, lazy bass and guitarist Lila Ramani’s astonishingly mellow vocal. The sonic sentiment is also carefully splattered all over Crumb’s self-titled 2016 LP (released last August) where Ramani and the band — bassist Jesse Brotter, multi-instrumentalist Brian Aronow and drummer Jonathan Gilad — bounce around a genre-defying blend of jazz, psych-rock and soul that they’ve been working on since first meeting at Tufts University. Brother Cephus — a Tampa-based indie-rock outfit built around über-talented brothers Seth and Gabe Davis — open the show along with a new project from producer Justin Myers and Virginia math-rock punk outfit Lance Bangs. J.T. Brown w/FayRoy/Ezra Huleatt Ezra Huleatt is really taking a liking to our neck of the woods. The frontman for Black Taxi recently spent a healthy chunk of time in town thanks to Safety Harbor Art and Music Center’s artist-in-residence program, and he returns to the Bay area for a show at The Attic above Rock Brothers Brewing’s tasting room. Huleatt — whose solo stuff leans more on folksy blues than it does on Black Taxi’s more danceable modern pub-rock — should be able to pull off quite the show in the listening room, and he’ll be backed up by a pair of solid locals at this one. Indian Rocks Beach beach-goth dudes FayRoy play selections from a sexy new LP, Heaven at Twenty-Seven, which they released in March. St. Pete songwriter J.T. Brown — who CL profiled in December — is already working on material for a follow up to his first solo LP (Phantom Heart), and he’ll work through new jams with a full band at this one. Wax In The Attic w/Knowmatic Tribe/DJ Boomerang Every now and then, during a show at The Attic above the Rock Brothers tasting room, you can hear a thump come through the floor. It usually comes from a DJ downstairs, but don’t expect this set to get too rowdy (it ends at 10 p.m.) as the new Ybor City venue tries its hand at an all-vinyl happy hour. Loose Talk w/Deaf Company This is a great excuse to get a little tipsy on a Friday. Loose Talk (featuring former members of Winter Haven post-rock heavyweights Anberlin) is coming off an appearance at 98 Rockfest at Amalie Arena, and the band will attempt to cram all the energy of its live show into the tiny performance space at The Bends where black-hearted blues songs like “Time Is Not On Your Side” and “Goin’ Down South” will scowl and stomp their way into your soul. Purple Hatter’s Ball It’s that time of year again, as fans make their way to the Panhandle to visit Florida’s live music darling, the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Located in Live Oak, the park sits just off the Suwannee River and gives attendees a chance to explore the unkept and untapped part of Florida’s nature and wildlife. Fans camping for the weekend will enjoy music from Emancipator, Dumpstaphunk, Perpetual Groove, and more. Check out our preview of the festival here. The Woodwork Tampa quartet The Woodwork makes its way to the Ella’s stage where a jazzy take on folk will entertain late night diners looking for stand up bass lines, bluesy solos and steamy vocals to go along with their Dog House Salad, bacon wrapped meatloaf or chicken porta-pesto pizza. There’s never a cover for these mealtime gigs, but the food obviously isn’t free. (Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe, Tampa) INFO
Shevonne A great opportunity to support a Tampa local and see a free show is coming up this Friday, when America’s Got Talent-alum Shevonne appears at Jannus Live. On season six, Shevonne caught the eye of judges thanks to her her skills on guitar and vocals. When she was eliminated from the Vegas round, she was later brought back by judges for the wild card round, but ultimately failed to reach the top five in votes. She would later appear for brief stint on season 15 of American Idol, where she went all the way to the Hollywood rounds. The show is open to the public, with tickets being first come, first serve. Backing her for the performance is her band The Force. (Jannus Live, St Petersburg) INFO —LJ
Brantley Gilbert w/Tyler Farr/Luke Combs The impressive climb to fame by Georgia singer-songwriter Brantley Gilbert is something he appears intent on reminding his Tampa fans about. Over the last six years, Gilbert has returned to the Tampa Bay area annually, with a bigger, badder show each time. His songwriting chops and country grit earned him a 2013 ACM for Best New Male Artist and helped him secure gigs opening for the likes of Toby Keith, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney. The most impressive thing with Gilbert has been his continued rise and maturation into a big name country star. This show marks his second time headlining a show in Tampa (he played the same shed last August.) This time around he is brings Tylar Farr and Luke Combs to support. Make sure to catch this country mainstay as he continues to build on an impressive career run. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa) INFO —LJ
