After weeks of uncertainty and a grassroots fundraising push, Tampa Heights’ beloved Lunar New Year lion dance at Café Hey is confirmed for this weekend.

Earlier this month, rising costs threatened to cancel the long-running celebration, prompting Tampa muralist Michelle Sawyer to launch a community fundraiser to cover performers, musicians and logistical expenses. With enough support now pledged, organizers have secured the lion dance troupe and finalized plans.

“This is what local businesses and residents working together is about,” Sawyer said in a social media post. “So grateful for everyone that donated or shared the fundraiser.”

The performance will unfold in the parking lot between the café and Oceanic Market, just as it has in years past.

The familiar rhythmic pulse of drums and firecrackers will echo down North Franklin Street. The brightly colored lion will weave through the café’s doorway, blessing the counter and greeting neighbors outside. Red envelopes will be exchanged and photos snapped as the community gathers to celebrate.

There is no cover for Café Hey’s Lion Dance Celebration, happening Saturday, Feb. 22, in Tampa. Organizers encourage attendees to arrive early, as parking lot space is limited.
