Tampa Bay artists Selina Roman and Todd Bates open ‘Pretty Vacant’ this Friday

An artist talk happens on Sept. 22.

Todd Bates’ fatal attraction to old neon signs meets Selina Roman’s knack for turning mid-century motels into think pieces this Friday when the graphic designer and photographer team up to open “Pretty Vacant” at Mize Gallery.

Be ready for large-scale photography, screen prints (like Bates’ “Everything Is Fine,” pictured) and bold, dusty portraits featuring the pastel walls at motels that are holding tight to old Americana. The show opens on Friday and runs through September 29; Roman and Bates will discuss their nostalgia fetish at an artist talk on September 22.

Opens Fri. Sept. 13. MIZE Gallery, 689 Dr. MLK Jr. St. N. Unit C, St. Petersburg. 6 p.m.-10 p.m. chadmize.com.
