Art scholarships for high school juniors and seniors

Money, money, mooonay!

Have a high school student (or are one) that’s interested in pursuing visual arts, music, theatre, dance, or literary arts? Not interested in accruing college debt? The Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture & the Arts (TBBCA) has a solution to that little problem. From now until their deadline of Feb. 20, they will be accepting applications for the 2017 Charlie Hounchell Art Stars Scholarships Program. The only catch is that you have to be a high school junior or senior living in Hillsborough, Pinellas or Pasco County.

Annually, TBBCA awards $15,000 (cha-ching!) to six Tampa Bay area students based on merit and artistic ability, which can be used towards tuition at the college, university, or professional arts training program of the students’ choice.

David Friedman was a scholarship recipient in 2015. As Blake High School alumni, he is currently a sophomore at Penn State University where he is majoring in musical theatre.

“School is going great, I still love it today as the first day I stepped on campus. I am learning constantly about the craft as well as learning under some of the best professors in the country. The scholarship allowed me to have an incredibly successful freshman year where I didn't have to worry about finances out of school along with the adjustments in school. It considerably lowered my tuition for the year allowing me to completely and successfully immerse myself into my studies as well as adapt to such a large and amazing university.

“To me, the scholarship meant that someone was willing to invest in my success and take a bit of a risk in my future as an artist, to allow me to continue to learn at the highest levels of the craft, and that others recognized my talents and my ability to be successful in this career to invest in my future,” Friedman says.

If you were wondering, you have approximately five weeks to start working on that paperwork, so kick the procrastination to the curb and get on this faster than those New Years Resolutions (yeah, we know all about your failed 2016 resolutions). Besides, no fee to apply? Can’t beat that. You can scope out the application on their website:, so get crackin'!
