Gasparilla International Film Festival Reels on the Rooftop

By far the coolest event associated with a film fest this year, GIFF’s rooftop showing of John Carpenter’s The Thing brought vintage drive-in flavor to the top of the Hyde Park parking garage. Cars filled the lot in front of a giant screen that had been lifted into place by a crane, each tuning its radio to the right frequency to hear the movie soundtrack. There was food and drink available throughout (though The Thing tends to make us need alcohol more than the nosh), and a post-movie party that featured a live DJ. Here’s hoping that the fine folks at GIFF make this one an annual event. Maybe next year they can show Christine.
