Recently, Tampa Bay comedian Law Smith emailed us voicing some concerns about Creative Loafing's local comedy coverage. We directed him to Michael Murillo's column, Laugh Tract — Who's Bringing the Funny. Murillo is a beloved comedian on the scene who gives us the inside scoop each week.
I reassured Smith that we frequently feature Q&As and event previews drawing readers to local comedy shows.
Today, Smith lunged at CL shock-jock style with the above Tweet. (Great job on cover graphic, by the way). It's always great to be immortalized in a meme, right?
But like every good old rap video, there's always a big Buuuut.
Allow me a moment to talk about CL's big "but."
Mr. Smith, you're invoking CL in a foregone conclusion that is false: We do not neglect the comedy scene. With our limited budget, we have a dedicated comedy writer in Murillo and he gets us info on shows we normally would have no idea about. (Comedians are funny but not always the best self-promoters.)
So before we get all confrontational and flamey-war-like, let's sit down and have a talk about ideas that can bring more attention to the intrepid funny people who stare into the bright lights and wondering faces to make people laugh each week.
CL invites you all in the conversation. Please leave a comment below. We don't wish to neglect local anything.
