Don't let the overcast and humid haze of summer get you down. Brighten your mood with Colorpalooza! Celebration — A Summer of Color @ the Morean. The series at the downtown St. Pete art facility runs through Sept. 2 and offers a slew of new exhibits, shows and experiences, family-friend happenings — and they are all free. They range from visual exhibitions to displays involving all of the senses. The following will be featured:
Mirage, mixed-media works by Florida artist Dolores Coe that conjure the carnival and Las Vegas Strip. Free, runs June 17-July 17.
Invent: Presented with freeFall Theatre, the exhibit allows you to rewrite or redefine a story inspired by the theater's costumes from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Free, runs June 17-July 17.
On Vacation with the Morean: an "art buffet" that allows guests to create their own postcards to send. $1 per card, runs June 17-Sept 2.
Recontextualizing Aesthetics: Digital technology fuses with traditional art in Neil Matthiessen's large-scale installations. Free, runs July 22-Aug. 21.
Color Inspired: After viewing Neil Matthiessen's installation, the community is allowed to make their mark on the walls using supplies at the center. Free, runs July 22-Aug. 21.
Hidden Ticket Treasure Hunt: The city-wide scavenger hunt for “glass” tickets grants free admissions to the Chihuly Collection, Morean Center for Clay, Glass Studio & Hot Shop and the Morean Art Center. There will be 100 colorful tickets hidden throughout downtown St. Petersburg. Visit Morean’s Facebook page for hints and updates though Sept. 2.
In addition, special workshops with award-winning artist Bruce Marsh and USF graphic design professor Matthiessen are scheduled throughout the summer. There will also be chances for the public to compete in The Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest and Nintendo Wii Rock Band Night.
The Morean Arts Center is at 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, and is open daily from 9 a.m. and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. 727-822-7872, moreanartscenter.org.
