Some of the best local artists in the area will be in shows in Tampa, St. Pete and elsewhere.

Here's a quick rundown:

Friday

Art of Box While it’s become a cliche and most artists are used to thinking “outside the box”, WTCA thought a new interesting challenge might be to go inside, outside and around it in exploration of new discoveries for its upcoming fall art show. In Art of Box, all submissions must have some type of box included within the piece; whether painted, photographed, made out of or as a subject in a fine art piece, all boxes and mediums, big and small are appropriate. Expect to see prominent locals and up-and-comers at the show in the historic Santaella cigar factory building: Warren Carrico Gibson, Jason Shiver, Vince Kral, Sheree Rensel, Stephen Handschu, Susan O’Hara, Moira Shiver, Elizabeth Plakidas and Mishou Sanchez. Fri., Oct. 25, 7-10 p.m. West Tampa Center for the Arts, 1906 Armenia Ave., Tampa. wtca.org.

Futurista The Singing Stone Gallery presents Futurista, an exhibit featuring the futuristic fine art jewelry of local goldsmith and designer Dan Balk. The opening reception will be held Fri., Oct. 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. and will be on view through Nov. 24. Free. Singing Stone Gallery, 1903 19th St., Tampa. 813-728-4325. singingstoneonline.com.

St. Pete Shuffle World Tournament After Party and Art Show Play and celebrate a historic milestone with local art from Todd Bates, Chad Mize, Natty Moss-Bond, Christine Page, Frank Strunk III and many more. Bands 6 Volt Rodeo and DieAlps! perform, too. Some 15 nations will be participating; salute them at the party with hearty high fives. Free. Fri., Oct. 25, 7-11 p.m. St. Pete Shuffle, 559 Mirror Lake Drive N., St. Petersburg. 727-822-2083. stpeteshuffle.com.

John Lichtenstein at Venture Compound Note: This is not Roy (though a reanimated dead artist would be Halloween-friendly). This is John, John Lichtenstein, an artist who has kindred sensibilities to the pop icon and has created more than 250 paintings this year alone — and he hasn’t stopped yet. Expect exuberant, irreverent bands Tetromino, Whitey Alabastard, Just Satellites and even Lichtenstein himself to help wash down the Venture Compound art experience with unique sounds. Opening reception is Fri., Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. $5. Oct. 25-Nov. 22. The Venture Compound, 2621 Fairfield Ave. S., St. Petersburg. venturecompound.com.

Saturday

Puerto Rican Mask Making with Lily Carrasquillo Carrasquillo will be presenting the story Vejigante Masquerade by Lulu DeLacre, which explains the history of the colorful masks. She will then assist children in creating their masks. Class limited to 25 — call to register. Hot glue guns will be used—parents should accompany children. Free. Sat., Oct. 26, 1-4 p.m. Tarpon Springs Library, 138 E. Lemon St., Tarpon Springs. 727-943-4922.

Dark Arts: Creep St. Pete Local Head to the historic South St. Pete firehouse, StationNumberThree, for an art exhibit/haunted house experience/Halloween party, presented by BlueLucy and Keep St. Petersburg Local. Food trucks, entertainment and more. Paintings, illustrations and other works by 65 artists will go on display at Station Number Three, a refurbished fire station in St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District. Several performances will take place throughout the evening, including appearances by Anton James Andresen, who performed last year as the "Naked Mentalist" and models dressed in frightful costumes by designer Dollface. This year, the art on tap was culled from about 100 submissions by organizers Casey Paquet and Bluelucy owner Chad Mize. Pale Horse, aka Chris Parks, and Dysfunctional Grace Art Co., aka Daniel James, return with spectacular illustrations and taxidermy sculpture, respectively. Other participants include Bask, Frank Strunk III, Daniel Mrgan, Sebastian Coolidge, Laura Spencer and Cake Marques. Marques, an Orlando-based painter, parodies Renaissance portraiture by depicting skeletons decked out in ruffled collars and other brilliantly vulgar human-monster mash-ups. Art from the show will be available for purchase in an online gallery after the one-night event. $10; $5 for Keep St. Pete Local members. Sat., Oct. 26, 7 p.m. $5 for KSPL member; $10 everyone else. Sat., Oct. 26, 7 p.m. Station Number Three, 2701 Fifth Ave. S, St. Petersburg. 813-500-7708. (Text contributed by Megan Voeller.) Visit stpetedarkarts.com for updates.
