Push past the Halloween clichés and take in some ghostly verse at the Lucky Poetry Funeral Tour, taking place this evening at 7 p.m. at Inkwood Books. The event features three prominent writers who shouldn’t disappoint unless your usually discerning brain have been eaten by zombies … and, yes, you can expect better metaphors than that one.
Nicole Steinberg, the editor of Forgotten Borough: Writers Come to Terms with Queens (SUNY Press), pays a visit. The author of the chapbook Birds of Tokyo (dancing girl press). Her poetry has appeared in several journals, and most recently, her work has appeared in Transhistoria, the Queens edition of the Guggenheim Museum’s ongoing project, stillspotting nyc. She’s the founder of Earshot, a New York reading series for emerging writers, and currently lives in Philadelphia.
J.D. Scott writes, design and edits his own literary mag. His first chapbook, Night Errands, won the 2012 Peter Meinke Prize for Poetry from YellowJacket Press and was released as a limited chapbook. His second chapbook, Funerals & Thrones, is now out through Birds of Lace Press as of August 2013.
Gianna Russo, a CL favorite and one of Tampa’s literary champions, is the author of a full-length poetry collection, Moonflower, (2011, Kitsune Books) winner of the Florida Book Award Bronze Medal, the Florida Publishers Association Silver Award and an Eric Hofer First Horizons Honorable Mention. The Pushcart Prize nominee haw written a slew of nonfiction essays that have appeared in the Tampa Bay Times, and she’s the founding editor of YellowJacket Press — currently the only publisher of poetry chapbook manuscripts in Florida. In 2011, Russo won Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay Award for her work with YellowJacket Press. If that weren’t enough, she also teaches academic and creative writing at St. Leo University.
