Do This: Mary Lynn Rajskub at Side Splitters

  • Say Her Name: Mary Lynn Rajskub steps away from her hit show 24 and onto a comedy club stage for a slate of shows this weekend.

Mary Lynn Rajskub doesn't have a name that flows off the tongue, but how about the show that helped make her famous? 24 is enjoying good reviews for its comeback season, and computer genius Chloe O'Brien is still an important character.

But is she funny?

If you've watched It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you already know that answer. "Gail the Snail" is a minor but memorable character, known for her quirky creepiness on a show where it's hard to stand out just by being bizarre. But it gives you an idea of Rajskub's comedy chops, and a hint of how she carries herself on stage.

Rajskub's cadence on stage is still a bit quirky, but the material — often drawing from her thoughts, desires and real-life experiences — is very aware and clever. It's not surprising that an experienced actor would have good comedic timing, but it's reassuring to see from someone you don't normally associate with stand-up comedy. The material fits her stage presence, and that's a positive for audiences this weekend.
People are catching on, too: Half her shows are labeled "special engagements," which means no passes accepted and slightly higher ticket prices.

Showtimes are Thursday at 8:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., Saturday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. 12938 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Info: sidesplitterscomedy.com or 813-960-1197.
