Florida Aquarium chomps down on Shark Week

There is a single week out of the year that is responsible for transforming sharks from the things of nightmares (at least my nightmares) into the fascinating creatures that they are, and that’s Shark Week.

The Florida Aquarium, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, is completely on top of this week of shark-tastic wonder, and are hosting their Shark Week Celebration July 11-12 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.

This two-day celebration, which coincides with the Discovery Channel's Shark Week and the 40th Anniversary of Jaws, explores the six different species of sharks in the Aquarium, as well as what measures we can take to protect them as they become more and more threatened.

While finding out more about the often misunderstood predators of the deep, shark-themed events will being going on around the Aquarium such as a scavenger hunt, interactive shark games, and special guest speakers.

The special underwater guest speakers are Marine Scientist Dr. Ellen Prager, who will be doing an interactive dive with the audience, and Dr. Dan Huber, shark expert from the University of Tampa, who will be answering questions while diving in the largest exhibit tank.

Catch Dr. Prager’s talk before the actual Shark Week Celebration, July 10 at 3:15 p.m. Dr. Huber’s talk will be during the event days, July 12 at 11 a.m. Both speakers will be in the Coral Reef Panoramic Window for their activities.

From terrifying to captivating in a single chomp, Shark Week enlightens the world about the true nature of sharks, and how they can be helped.

The Florida Aquarium is at 701 Channelside Drive, Tampa. flaquarium.org.
