After planting a flag in USL Super League history last weekend, the first professional women’s soccer team in Tampa Bay wants to build a big, beautiful forever home.

Today, Tampa Bay Sun FC—which won the USL Super League championship game last Saturday—unveiled plans for a 15,000-seat stadium in Ybor Harbor, a proposed neighborhood on the southern end of the fledgling Gasworx district.

This season, the club played at the revamped Riverfront Stadium which holds about 5,000. The venue at Blake High School, downtown Tampa’s first outdoor stadium, was never meant to be a permanent home.

If the vision of a permanent location for Tampa Bay Sun FC comes to fruition, it would find the club playing in a venue like none other in the city. Steinbrenner Field, current home of the hurricane-displaced Tampa Bay Rays, holds 11,026 fans, and Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg (home of the Tampa Bay Rowdies, who play in the USL Championship division) holds just over 7,000. Nearby Amalie Arena is indoors and can hold over 21,000 fans depending on the event.

Ybor Harbor and Gasworx—on opposite sides of the Lee Roy Selcom Expressway—are the projects of Tampa developer Darryl Shaw who also is one of three Tampa Bay Sun FC owners. (Shaw is also a once-Tampa Bay Times investor who made his money, in part, as CEO of BluePearl Veterinary.)

In a press release, Shaw and the Sun said they envision a 33- acre multi-use development that would hold the USL’s new headquarters and a year-round venue for concerts, festivals and sporting events. The venue—which would include a boutique hotel—could also host select U.S. National Team and International matches for both the men’s and women’s teams. The FIFA Club World Cup is currently happening at venues across the U.S. including Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.

“We believe in the power of sport to inspire, unite, and drive meaningful change. By anchoring this historic neighborhood with a vibrant home for women’s professional soccer, we’re investing in our city’s future and honoring the community that makes it thrive,” Shaw wrote in a press release.

The stadium project already has support from Tampa Mayor Jane Castor who lauded the stadium’s potential effect on the visibility of women’s sports and local economic growth. “Tampa is a city of champions — and now we’re dreaming even bigger,” Castor added.

The stadium—designed by the Beck Group, according to the release—does not yet have an anticipated start date or cost, as it is too early in the process.

Too bad the stadium doesn’t exist already—it would’ve been a great place to have a boat parade.

The USL first began in 1986 as a minor indoor soccer league, but has evolved greatly since then. It is now the largest and fastest-growing soccer organization in North America. The league has accumulated 38 men’s teams and, on top of that, are planning to launch a new Division One league in 2028. The USL Super League just wrapped its inaugural season.
