After (jokingly?) saying he was testing free agency, star tight end Rob Gronkowski became the second important Tampa Bay Buccaneer re-signing on Monday afternoon.
Gronk, as expected, is returning to Tampa to keep playing with his good friend Tom Brady, with whom he’s connected for more touchdown passes than anyone in his career (has Gronk even caught a TD pass from anyone not named Tom Brady?)
No receiver in Brady’s career has caught more touchdowns from the GOAT than Gronk, and next year the two will continue their bromance, and probably those awkward weekly Twitter videos on the Bucs’ account.
While this is another important deal that had to be made for the Bucs to continue their quest to repeat, Tampa Bay should not be done. The deal is for one year, $10 million, but the Bucs are using those weird voidable years again, spreading the cap hit over four years.
Following the Gronk and Shaq signings, the Bucs probably have around $4 million left in cap space, but who knows what that number could actually turn out to be, with their recent wizardry with the cap.
In other news around the league, the Saints re-signed former Bucs QB and first-overall pick Jameis Winston to compete with Taysom Hill for the starting job for 2021. This was following Drew Brees’ retirement announcement, as he retired 15 years to the day after originally signing with the Saints in 2006. While no one knows what to expect from the Saints, with Jameis and Taysom both being wild cards, it’ll certainly be fun to watch them take on the Bucs following that embarrassment the Saints suffered in the NFC Divisional round.
Look for the next big Bucs-related news to be either about Ryan Succop or Ndamokung Suh, as both are probably the top two free agents that need to be re-signed for the Bucs.
