Lawrence began his career doing stand-up on the Washington, D.C., circuit, parlaying his act into a 1983 appearance on Star Search. He quickly became a household name with the introduction of the FOX-TV sitcom Martin which ran for five seasons, from 1992 to '97. His motion picture credits including Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing, House Party, Boomerang, Bad Boys and 2010’s Death at a Funeral.
In his new "Doin' Time" Comedy Tour, Lawrence creates characters, improvs, dances and jokes about how everybody’s doin’ time in life.
