Sonic the Hedgheog has already made the jump to the iPhone, but it doesn't look like his rival Mario will be following suit. When asked if Nintendo would consider making games for other mobile platforms such as the iPhone, Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata answered unfavorably to the idea.
We think Nintendo is a company whose value is recognized by the way that we combine great software experiences with particular hardware capabilities that only we can offer. Therefore, my feeling is that offering our IP on other devices would have an adverse impact on the overall value of our company and at the same time I think that its not something that would add value to Nintendo.
Ironically, Iwata's explanation sounds uncannily similar to the reasons why Apple won't license Mac OS to PC manufacturers. As long as Nintendo keeps making hardware, Mario will never know what an iPhone is.
