On the Radar: Bay Area Renaissance Festival

Each weekend has a different focus, from Italian Carnivale to Buccaneer Beer Fest, where they’ll serve tankards of ye olde Budweiser products. No matter the kitschy theme, the entire run of the fest will feature the usual sideshow acts, stage combat and street performers, not to mention the real reasons we all crave a visit to the quaint, 16th-century village scene: deep-fried Oreos and wooden sword vendors. Feb. 13-March 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fri.-Sat., Museum of Science and Industry, 4801 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, $17.95 adults, $14.95 seniors, $9.95 children 5-12, bayarearenaissancefest.com.

Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview up-and-coming arts events to mark your calendar for. Having the Bay Area Renaissance Festival (which opens this weekend) in the backyard of MOSI makes for a sort of retro-future theme park complex. On one end, there’ s a hurricane wind tunnel and astronaut ice cream. On the other, gigantic smoked turkey legs and a human chess match.

For the six weekends it runs, however, the Ren Fest bashes MOSI’s science-fact edu-tainment with a blunt axe.
