On the Radar: Samarpana combines Indian and western styles to showcase the evolution of dance

This exhibition blends Indian classical and western musical styles to create a "multicultural musical tapestry while maintaining the vibrancy of the Indian dance." Witness the creativity, humor, seriousness, and passion expressed through the dances -- some dating back more than 4000 years. 6 p.m. Sat., May 8, Sickles High School, 7950 Gunn Hwy., Tampa, $10-$20; contact Supriya Ketkar at 813-454-6898 for tickets and info.

Welcome to On the Radar, where we preview upcoming events to mark your calendars for. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Indian dance? (And, no, I'm not talking about feathered headdresses and rain sticks.) You probably think of flashy Bollywood films, but there's so much more to Indian dance than what you might've seen in those (sometimes cheesy) Indian musicals. Learn about the history, culture and evolution of dance at Saturday's  Samarpana: An Offering of Dance, a classical program presented by students of Shreyas School of Indian Dance (pictured, photo by Christiana Paula).
