Delve into the biography of Charles Dickens to uncover the real-life Scrooge and the inspiration behind the beloved holiday tale, A Christmas Carol. Inkwood’s Official Book Club meets Thursday, Dec. 18, 7 p.m., to discuss this month’s selection, Inventing Scrooge by Carlo Devito.

Got a rant or a story or a poem? Pick up the mic and show off your stuff at Oral Fixation’s LGBTQ monthly open mic on Thursday, Dec. 18 at Ybor City’s R Bar. Doors open at 9 p.m. Performers of all types are welcome and encouraged to share their art. The evening will also feature Oral Fixation’s fourth annual Holiday Marketplace, featuring items from local businesses and artists.

The Dunedin Writers Group meets at the Dunedin Public Library Friday, Dec. 19, 9:30 a.m. The group is opening to serious writers and those aspiring to become one. Respectful critiquing of each other’s work is encouraged.

The Saint Petersburg Writers Daylight Hours Meetup Group will meet at St. Pete’s Hollander Hotel Friday, Dec. 19, 2 p.m.

Join the creative minds behind the soon-to-be filmed Beatnik: The Movie for an evening of art, spoken word and refreshments Friday, Dec. 19, 8 to 11 p.m., at The [email protected] Andresia Realshtz, Poetic Kiss, Dennis Amadeus, Ms. Wright and Slam Anderson are among the spoken word performers on the lineup. Music will be provided by D.J. Shurefire. Proceeds from the event will go to the making of the film, which will be shot in Oakland, California this spring.

Improbable Athenaeum presents a dramatic reading of A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas at the Seminole Heights Library, Saturday, Dec. 20, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Spark your creativity at Tampa Free Skool’s Writing in the Moment workshop at the Mermaid Tavern in Tampa Sunday, Dec. 21, 6:30 p.m. Led by Cole Bellamy, an instructor of English and creative writing at St. Leo University, this free workshop will feature fun activities to build up your literary skills and get you writing. Activities designed to inspire on-the-spot writing include marathon writing, Bouts-Rimes, an Exquisite Corpse and a chain story.
