Shana Moulton: Journeys Out of the Body

$17. June 18-October 9. Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Dr. N.E., St. Pete. 727-896-2667. mfastpete.org.

OPENS SATURDAY: Knick knacks — you know, when you visited your grandparents’ house - the stuff that would collect on the shelves, the walls, and the counters? Frillies, doilies, the little dolphin sculptures and fake dusty plants? Yeah, that stuff. Visual artist Shana Moulton grew up with few children around in her California mobile home. Moulton quickly became aware that the seniors around her developed a certain pattern of either collecting meaningless gadgets ordered from cheesy infomercials or their eyes were glued to the soap operas. Moulton also found that they played home movies for entertainment. Putting her memories into art, Moulton will showcase a display of nine installments from her Whispering Pines series and will also include custom sculptures and video in Journeys Out of the Body. Moulton’s alter ego, Cynthia (a mute with wild fantasies, humor and anxiety) will display her corky take on Moulton's experiences growing up. Cynthia will be the focus of large video specific exhibitions as well as a live performance. Come see how our habits of consumerism and our obsessions with self-help fads can be so carefully displayed with an intentional and humorous message.
