We sure know how to pick ‘em.

If you’ve followed Creative Loafing's critics’ choices for Best of the Bay in the Comedy categories, you’ve seen many of them go on to great success over the years. J.B. Ball is now a nationally-touring comedian. Johnny B. is heard nightly on 102.5-FM The Bone. Matt Fernandez released a comedy special on Amazon Prime, and Cam Bertrand is currently competing on "America’s Got Talent"

Now John J. Murray adds his name to the list by recording a comedy special on Friday, July 30 at St. Petersburg's Spitfire Comedy House.

Murray, a previous Best Up-and-Coming Comedian selection, will record his first special (tentatively-titled "Rhinoceros") this Friday at the Spitfire Comedy House in St. Petersburg. Murray’s 420-friendly observations are tinted by a healthy dose of self-deprecation, and skepticism of people in general. The four-camera shoot will be considered for potential streaming opportunities in the future.

A few tickets remain for the two shows Friday night (comedians usually perform twice when recording so they can compile the best parts from each set), so you still have a couple of chances to support a local comedian who’s finally putting his best stuff on video. Murray’s comedy pals Jerod Walker and Brad Gilmore will provide support on the shows as well, so it’s a full night of comedy in St. Petersburg. And when you see them, just remember that Best of the Bay was proven right again. You’re welcome, Tampa Bay!

John J. Murray’s Comedy Special Taping with Jerod Walker and Brad Gilmore. Friday, July 30, 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Spitfire Comedy House, 1920 1st Ave. S, St. Petersburg. Tickets: $15 with group discounts available. spitfirecomedy.com
