The Laugh Tract — Who's Bringing the Funny

  • You can catch Nick DiPaolo at Side Splitters this weekend.

This week features a number of comedians who don't normally perform in the area. While it's nice to have funny regulars on stage, it's also good to sample some of the other stand-up talents that tour the country. You might see a familiar name in there, but if you want you see some different faces, this is the week to visit a club or two.

Here's the lineup for this week:

Comedy Clubs

John Rathbone at Tampa Improv. Rathbone has something of a newscaster's cadence, which lends gravity to his comedic observations. When it's said with conviction and wit, the absurd becomes even funnier. Showtime is Thursday at 8 p.m. $10. 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. Info: improvtampa.com or 813-864-4000.

Andrew Santino at Tampa Improv. Most comedians are observant, but Santino takes it to another level. He finds the humor in everyday behavior that's so ingrained, you have to own up to it while you're laughing. Audiences will see a lot of themselves or someone they know in his material and crowd interactions. Showtimes are Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. $17. 1600 E. Eighth Ave., Tampa. Info: improvtampa.com or 813-864-4000.

Devin Siebold at Side Splitters. Orlando-based Siebold heads to Tampa to headline the Thursday night show. It's also a run-through before heads home to record his first DVD the following night. Showtime is Saturday at 6 p.m. $10. 12938 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Info: sidesplitterscomedy.com or 813-960-1197.

Nick DiPaolo at Side Splitters. DiPaolo is one of the top roasters on cable television, using his sarcastic delivery to pepper the intended target with clever insults. His stand-up show should cover similar themes, with criticisms about life and people that resonate with what the audience is thinking.  Showtimes are Thursday at 8:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. $16-$20. 12938 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa. Info: sidesplitterscomedy.com or 813-960-1197.

David Beck at Side Splitters. Beck has a likable stage presence and a natural cadence. His wit will be on display as he headlines the Sunday night show. Showtime is Sunday at 7 p.m. $10-$12. 12938 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. Info: sidesplitterscomedy.com or 813-960-1197.

Roundboy Jimmy Graham at Snappers Grill. Not, not the all-pro tight end Jimmy Graham. This is the much-funnier Roundboy Jimmy Graham, serving up life lessons and no-nonsense stories with the comfortable stage presence of a seasoned stand-up vet. Note: The Thursday show is a fundraiser for Suncoast Primate Sanctuary. Showtimes are Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. $12. 36657 U.S. 19 N., Palm Harbor. Info: snappersgrill.com or 727-938-2027.

Corey Alexander at Coconuts Comedy Clubs (at MJ's). Alexander delivers quick wit with a quick delivery, keeping audiences engaged with relatable material and exaggerated premises.  Showtimes are Thursday through Saturday at 9:30 p.m. $18-$20. 5501 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach. Info: coconutscomedyclubs.com or 727-360-5653.

Steve Arik at 2 Palms Bar & Bistro. Arik will give you a choice between a clean show, a dirty show and an off-the-charts dirty show. Choose the last one. It's what he does best, and with the timing of a stand-up vet with more than 25 years in the business, it's what audiences have been enjoying for decades. Showtime is Saturday at 8:30 p.m. $10. 2950 Gulf to Bay Blvd., Clearwater. Info: tampabaycomedy.com or 727-741-8014.

Kevin Lee at NPR Joke Factory. Lee is something of a triple threat, with comedy, juggling and magic as part of his set. Oh, and maybe some fire, too. Don't forget the possibility of fire. This is the show to see if you like variety with your stand-up.
Showtime is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. $5-$7. 5015 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. Info: nprjokefactory.com or 727-807-6974.

One-nighters and Independent Shows

G. David Howard at Sporty's On The Beach. Howard's weekly residence at Sporty's features the longtime comedian drawing from his decades of stage experience. He mixes his regular material with plenty of crowd work to provide the kind of set only a true stand-up veteran can provide. By the way, there's a $5 coupon for this show on Howard's website under "special offers."
Showtime is Friday and Saturday at 9:05 p.m. $20. 17093 Gulf Blvd., North Redington Beach. Info: 727-596-6725 or gdavidhoward.com.
