TIGLFF Movie Review: Love Free or Die

A compelling documentary about the first openly gay Episcopal bishop in the U.S.

As the first openly gay (and partnered) bishop in the Anglican Communion, Eugene Robinson, Bishop of the Archdiocese of New Hampshire, is already an LGBT hero. This documentary suggests that he’s worthy of admiration not just because of his courage but because of how good he is at his job.

“O God of our many understandings” is how he begins the prayer at the inauguration of Barack Obama, and it is his embrace of those many understandings, and his bedrock faith in a God of love, not fear, that clearly helped him brave the worldwide resistance that greeted his ordination.

Macky Alston’s film details the struggles that ensued within the Episcopal Church in the U.S., carefully building suspense as the church votes on ordination of gay clergy and performing same-sex marriages.
