“Breaking Barriers”—a workshop series that allows military veterans and their families to learn photography for free—returns to USF Contemporary Art Museum this summer. The goal of the five-week workshop, now in its fourth year, is to give veterans a voice through art and help them integrate back into civilian life.
Last year, Tampa-based contemporary photographer Selina Roman taught participants to channel their memories and personal experiences into photographs using their cell phones.

In 2021, the photography workshop focuses on place. In “Still Life, Memory and Place,” Roman teaches participants to tell the story of a place through photographing its objects and landscape.
Also, for the first year since the program’s inception, there’s a cellphone video workshop.
Several studies point to art therapy as an effective treatment for PTSD, and Breaking Barriers makes it easy for local veterans to convert their trauma into something beautiful. The best thing about it: it’s free and all you need is a cell phone to participate.
The deadline to register is July 6.
