An attorney for the Hillsborough board said Tuesday the threatened funding would amount to about $950 million.

Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared at the board’s Wednesday meeting to tout the updated standards.

The Southern Poverty Law Center issued a statement Wednesday saying the governor “chose to ignore the will of both parties” when he vetoed the bill.

The bill sought to shield the release of “personal identifying information” about candidates applying to be college or university presidents.

Opponents of the measure have argued that mandating a moment of silence in public schools blurs the line between church and state.

The bill also would offer “buy-one-get-one-free” courses to students pursuing degrees in high-demand fields such as science, math and engineering at state universities.

The bill now also protects colleges and universities from coronavirus-related lawsuits.

“I am glad to see that public opposition was enough to stop this awful legislation for now.”

The ‘viewpoint diversity’ surveys would ask students if feel they have to speak their mind on campus and in the classroom.

Baxley also drew criticism from opponents for saying Bright Futures has become “viewed as something they’re entitled to have.”

“Florida’s system of compensating school board members with salaries and benefits, to the extent that we do, is a national outlier.”

“There’s no useless degrees. But there should be a way to wire hire-ability into this, because people need to make a living,” Baxley said.

“In these crazy times we live in, what is the definition of a grandparent, and how far do we expand that?” asked Rep. Mike Caruso, R-Delray Beach.

John Mower, public policy director for the LGBTQ advocacy organization Equality Florida, said the Senate measure “could compel schools to out LGBTQ youth.”
