BEST HARDCORE LESBIAN RAP GROUP: Yo Majesty

Yo Majesty Rap music has long been a genre where homophobia flourishes. So it was a brave move when the three women of Tampa hip-hop group Yo Majesty decided to fill their debut EP, Yo EP, with blatant references to their sexuality. Over a wild sonic milieu courtesy of U.K. punk-funk crew Hard Feelings, Yo Majesty rap with aplomb about getting “Club Action” and the irresistibility of their “Kryptonite Pussy.” To up the ante, emcee Jewel B. typically performs topless, as was the case when Yo Majesty created a ruckus at this year’s South by Southwest music conference that took place in March. Since then, YM has embarked on an extensive tour that also included a successful European trip in August. In recent months, glowing reviews of the group have appeared in publications such as L.A. Weekly and Time Out London.
