BEST SURPRISE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE: Patrick Bettison

The August concert was billed as a Battle of the B3s — jazz and blues organ players facing off for cheers and bragging rights — but a guy wielding a chromatic harmonica strolled in and hijacked the show. (Essentially, chromatic harps are bigger and have more available notes than blues harps. Sound-wise, think Stevie Wonder.) Bettison, who plays a variety of instruments but is best known as an electric bassist, played some truly lovely, mellifluous stuff on his mouth organ. He performed with organist Stan Hunter and a drummer, and every melody he played, every solo he took, drew a delighted response from the sold-out crowd at The Palladium in St. Pete.
