MOST SURPRISING SUCCESS FOR A BAR GIMMICK: Dwarf wrestling at the James Joyce Pub

For some, it’s a telling sign of the end of Ybor City’s former glory — to others, a shameless exploitation of dwarves and women. But there’s no denying that the dwarf-wrestling matches at the James Joyce Pub attract a large and diverse crowd of inebriated revelers. Ray Gougeon came up with the women-versus-little-person theme — more of a novelty exhibition than a true competition — when he bought the bar a year ago. The events started out, uh, small, but these days the increasingly shocking matches pack the place. Gougeon’s newest gimmick? Dwarf Cage Matches. 1704 E. Seventh Ave., Tampa, 813-247-1896, MySpace.com/jamesjoycepub.
