WORST DOUBLE BOOKING: The MacDill Air Show & St. Pete Grand Prix

For years, alert promoters on both sides of the Bay have been scheduling events that cater to the people’s love of loud, fast-moving machines. Tampa has the air show, which draws hundreds of thousands of aircraft enthusiasts to MacDill Air Force Base each year for high-in-the-sky action. St. Pete is a little more grounded, with the St. Petersburg Grand Prix auto race winding its way through the streets of downtown each spring. This year, the air show and Grand Prix took place on the same weekend (March 30-April 1), forcing fans to pick a favorite or try to sprint across the bay and catch both events. It’s reassuring that Tampa Bay has reached a point where there can be more than one big happening in a week (a real change from just a few years ago), but next year can we please skip the April Fools joke and give each of these events its own weekend?
