BEST FINE-DINING BUZZ-KILL: Television

When we’re paying $27 for a slab of rare tuna, do we really need a side order of ESPN? Or even the Food Network? We reluctantly allow that televisions might (possibly) have some use during lunch hours, for individuals who are unable to entertain themselves for a half hour, and they seem de rigueur for bars. So here’s a rule: Any boob tube visible from a (fine) dining room should be shut off by 5 p.m. No exceptions, except for that classic combination of foie gras and football.
