BEST WITCH HUNT: Largo City Commission’s handling of the Steve-to-Susan Stanton affair

One of the Bay area’s longest-serving city managers was Steve Stanton, who had a strong grip on Largo City Hall and who was gener-ally well-regarded as an administrator. But he had a secret few of his colleagues knew: Steve really wished to be Susan. Stanton is a transsexual, and after years of thought and preparation, he had decided to begin the transformation process. When the St. Petersburg Times found out and published a 1A story about it, most of his commission turned on him, firing him within a few short weeks. Uglier, though, was the undertone from some politicians and Largo residents who wondered which other city employees knew about Stanton’s secret and why didn’t they tell. Round up the cordwood and matches!
