WORST STOMPING OF A CITIZEN GROUP’S REQUEST: Mayor Rick Baker

The request from St. Petersburg’s Council of Neighborhood Associations seemed appropriate and fiscally responsible: Given recent staffing and morale problems in the city’s police department and the budget shortfalls caused by property tax reform, shouldn’t the city investigate how much it would cost to contract with the Pinellas sheriff for police protection? Baker’s answer was quick and complete, saying of the idea: “It’s a nonstarter.”
