Best Local Showing At A National Festival: TIE: Applebutter Express at Bonnaroo & Zulu Wave at CBGB Festival

Two local foursomes with very different aesthetics shined on national festival stages this summer. Applebutter Express jammed funky ukulele newgrass tunes during a Thursday afternoon set at the 11th annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee, playing for several hundred amid a mass of 80,000. A month later, Zulu Wave kicked off the free Saturday concert at the inaugural CBGB Festival in NYC’s Times Square. They were introduced by none other than Matt Pinfield himself, and their propulsive prog-fused indie rock warmed up the crowd for such acts as The Hold Steady and Superchunk playing the stage later that day.
