Best repair to a city’s reputation: The election of Michael Smith in Largo

Best repair to a city’s reputation

Five years ago the city of Largo covered itself in ignominy by firing its city manager, Steve Stanton, after news leaked to the (then) St. Petersburg Times that he was transitioning from male to female. Creative Loafing ran the Largo city seal on its cover with a big “WRONG” slapped across it, and Largo got all kinds of grief for its apparent intolerance. Times seem to have changed; last fall the city elected its first openly gay city commissioner, Michael Smith, who defeated (by a resounding margin) the commissioner who led the charge to dismiss Stanton.
