Best public art relo: The Exploding Chicken goes to Channelside

Best public art relo

George Sugarman’s much-mocked sculpture got nothin’ but grief (and a fowl nickname) when it sat at its original location at the corner of Kennedy and Ashley. But thanks to a partnership between Tampa city government and local businesses, the chicken has found a new home (or roost, or perch, or whatever aviary wisecrack you want to make) in the traffic circle near the Florida Aquarium. And whaddya know, it looks great! No longer scrunched onto a street corner and overshadowed by the austere beauty of the Rivergate Tower, it now sits by itself in a wide open space where it does explode, but in a good way, with a goofy exuberance that had formerly been all cooped up.
