Best spirit of the 600 Block: Bill “Woo” Correira

Best spirit of the 600 Block

It was like clockwork: Every Wednesday evening at Sake Bomb in St. Petersburg, you’d see Woo painting a vibrant and lifelike red grouper or lionfish. The rest of the time, he could be found bringing colorful aquatic scenes to life outside his gallery on St. Pete’s 600 Block. After his untimely death — he passed away inside his studio on November 26 at the age of 43 — friends painted a collaborative mural commemorating his life, which touched so many in the community, in the alley behind his gallery. Woo’s impact as a force of artistic good continues today; friends hope to establish a scholarship program in his honor soon. The loss of the artist, arts advocate, and generally wonderful human still vibrates for those who knew him.
