Best reason to visit East Hillsborough: Firehouse Cultural Center

Best reason to visit East Hillsborough

The area is the butt of many jokes, but Ruskin, just south of carny land, was founded in 1908 as an “intentional community” and named after utopian artist and philosopher John Ruskin, who promoted the importance of the arts in education and community life. The city’s non-profit Firehouse Cultural Center, which opened in 2011 after $160,000 in renovations and offers an impressive variety of arts programming, follows in Ruskin’s footsteps. 101 First Ave. N.E., Ruskin, 813-645-7651, firehouseculturalcenter.org
