Best Roots/Americana: Boxcar Hollow

Best Roots/Americana

The quartet took shape early this year and has been playing a Thursday night residency at Mandarin Hide since May. Boxcar Hollow draws on the traditions of newgrass and folk music but adds a plugged-in kick and experimental-jammy prowess to the equation, mixing original songwriting with re-imagined covers by artists ranging from Bob Dylan to Bon Iver. Drummer/percussionist Jeff Baker and electric bassist Jack Pieroth hold down a steady-pounding low-end, Matt Weis wails on Fender and hollow body guitars, and Nashville-bred multi-instrumentalist Greg Holt uses effects pedals to wring out wet trippy notes from his fiddle; he also happens to be the official fiddler for both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Storm teams. facebook.com/boxcarhollow, boxcarhollow.com
