Best Poetic Justice: THE JOE STINES CHILDREN'S LIBRARY

Best Poetic Justice

Speaking of Ms. Storms, no ironic turnaround feels sweeter than this one. Children’s librarian Joe Stines was the director of Hillsborough’s public library system in 2005 when Commissioner Storms launched her attacks on county support of “gay pride,” using as her example a display of “gay books” in a library branch that made her worry that children would see it and ask their parents what “gay” is. The ban was repealed in 2013, and this year Stines, who is now retired (and is, by the way, gay), returned to Hillsborough for a dedication: The Joe Stines Children’s Library in the newly opened Robert W. Saunders, Jr. branch at 15th and Nebraska.
