Best Tampa Bay Sports Tradition: PLAYING WHILE INJURED

Ben Bishop

The Rays’ trail of tears reached Ripley’s Believe It or Not proportions this season. First there was the string of injuries suffered by the pitching staff, including the elbow surgery that knocked out ace Alex Cobb for the season. Then there were the on-again, off-again, he’s-better, he’s-not sagas of key players like Desmond Jennings and Steven Souza, Jr. Controversial new Bucs QB Jameis Winston sprained his ankle before the season even started (and given his performance in the season opener, some may wish be wishing he’d stayed on the sidelines). But one thing’s for sure: No one surpasses the gutsy endurance of the Lightning’s Tyler Johnson and Ben Bishop, who played through a broken wrist and a groin injury, respectively, during the oh-so-close, oh-so-painful Stanley Cup finals.
