Best family faceoff (paternal): Mujaheed Abdul-Rashid & Adrian Roberts in Jitney, American Stage

Roberts and Abdul-Rashid have it out.

The closing scene in Act I of August Wilson’s Jitney is a scorcher, a father-and-son faceoff laden with decades of bitterness and betrayal that ends with the father declaring, “You are my son. I helped to bring you into this world. But from this moment on...I’m calling the deal off.” I can’t imagine any two actors doing a better job in this scene than Mujaheed Abdul-Rashid and Adrian Roberts did in the American Stage production of the play — particularly Abdul-Rashid as the father, his concentrated, intractable outrage just one facet of a wonderfully complex performance. —David Warner
